I haven’t had the chance to play Skylanders so I really don’t know yet. A game I have been introduced to recently is called Kerbal Space Program. You get to build rockets and design missions to different planets. It uses real rocket science and is very realistic, which means you figure out what problems affect real rockets.

I have minimal experience of Skylanders as my son is still too young for those sorts of games. In the future I can see some epic battles going down between us on some game consoles. However, as a physicist I am interested in the underlying physics being used in computer games. A quick look suggests that the Skylanders game uses the Havok physics engine. This is a very good and realistic simulation of physics which is used in huge amount of games. In fact it is not that different from the models I write myself to simulate the planets.
Something interesting though is that physicists create lots of simulations to help understand what’s happening in the world around us. This also means they can be very good at using the same understanding of the world and computer skills to help improve and create the games we play.

…Is it bad that I don’t know what this is?

No idea what Skylanders are . . . sorry. But doing a quick Google . . . they look like fun.
