I get to do so many different things so I never get bored. Being a researcher means you get to travel a lot and meet lots of interesting people in conferences around the world. I also love getting to work with real soil from the moon because it is so rare!

The infinitely rare, transcendental “Eureka!” moments when suddenly all your reading and research and hard work makes sense, and finally you see the bigger picture.

…This has happened about twice in all my years, but oh man is it worth it.

The most exciting thing about research in general is that you are working on something that no one else has ever done before. For a period of time you are the only person in the world that knows something new that’s never been discovered before. As a scientist you are naturally good at problem solving. However sometimes you will come up against some really difficult problems. You can’t ask anyone for help as no one has done it before. These types of problems can take quite a while to find the answers to but when you do it’s the best feeling in the world.

Knowing that what you spend your time on is important and “part of something bigger”.
Also, the day to day work can be quite varied so it keeps on being interesting.

My job lets me treat patients in hospitals and astronauts. The best part is getting to meet so many different people from different walks of life 🙂
