Scientists don’t generally have a dress code. They will normally wear what is comfortable and something that is safe if working in a lab. I normally dress smart especially if I am giving lectures.

It is a little known fact that scientists don’t all wear glasses, lab coats, and leather elbow pads all day. Working in a geology department, most of the scientists I see wear their hiking gear as though they’re going off for an adventure in their lunch time.

Right now I’m wearing jeans, converse, and a snuggly jumper — nice and comfy for maximum brain efficiency.

One of the great things about being a researcher is that you can wear what you like. I wear jeans and a hoodie most days but I’ll smarten up when important people are visiting the machine we’re building. I do have to put on a lab coat and special gloves when I work with liquid nitrogen so it doesn’t get on my skin and freeze it! Also, when I work with machines that will go into space we have to work in a clean room which means the dust and dirt levels are carefully controlled. That’s when I have to put on lots of silly clothes with bags on my feet, two pairs of gloves, a onesie and a funny hat and mask!
