The first rocket capable of getting to space was the German V2 (1942) . . . 14 m tall.
The first rocket that successfully placed an object (Sputnik) in orbit was the Russian R-7 . . . approx. 30m tall.
But the very first “rockets” were used in Ancient China as weapons . . . these are the rockets that started it all demonstrating the principles of rocket propulsion . . . they were only a couple of feet in length.
